About

Planboo joined forces with Solidaridad to leverage the magnitude of their smallholder farmer network while deploying our technical expertise in biochar production and carbon credit generation.

The pilot project works with maize and coffee farmers based in the Songwe region of western Tanzania. After the maize harvest and processing, crop residues like maize stalks and cobs are typically left on the field to decompose.

By turning this waste into biochar and applying it on the coffee orchards, the carbon is stored into the ground instead of being released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.

Biochar’s benefits for the soil are tremendous, increasing fertility and moisture retention, making the crops more resilient against drought and reducing the need for conventional chemical fertilizers. At the same time, the revenue from the credits provides the smallholder farmers with a new source of income that makes a real impact in their lives.
